Biographical Information
Tricia Middleton and Joel Taylor were born in Canada in 1972, one month and one day apart. Tricia was born in Vancouver, and Joel in Toronto, although he moved to Vancouver at a very young age. They met in 1990 and have been best friends ever since. As long time friends with similar aesthetic interests, Tricia Middleton and Joel Taylor began collaborating on film, installation, and single channel video in 1998. Tricia Middleton holds a BFA from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Studio Arts (1997) and an MFA from Concordia University (2005). Joel Taylor was a Visual Arts student before moving into Film Studies at the School for Contemporary Art at Simon Fraser University. He holds a BFA in Film Production from Simon Fraser (1999).
Middleton and Taylor’s single channel videotapes have been shown all over the world at festivals including the New York Video Festival (NYC), Videobrasil Electronic Arts Festival (Sao Paolo), Argos Arts (Brussels), Tranz Tech (Toronto), Rencontres internationale Paris/Berlin (both in Paris and Berlin), Video Art Plastiques in Basse-Normandie, etc, etc. They have presented their installation work in group and solo exhibitions including solo exhibitions at the Khyber Centre for the Arts in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and the Helen Pitt Gallery in Vancouver, British Columbia. Recent group shows include Cambridge Galleries, Cambridge Ontario, Saydie Bronfman Centre for the Arts, Montreal, Quebec, Art System in Toronto, Ontario, and the London Art Biennial in London, England.
Tricia Middleton was the Operations Co-ordinator at Video In, Vancouver, from 2000 to 2002, and Joel Taylor was the lead technician for Video Out Distribution. The two relocated to Montreal in 2002 and 2003 respectively. Joel Taylor works with the Hexagram Institute where is the resident video specialist. Tricia Middleton is the Co-ordinator of Student and Alumni Relations, Faculty of Fine Arts, Concordia University. Apartment Living and West-Nile Redux is their latest collaborative offering, released mid-2004. Middleton and Taylor are currently working on a new video project, tentatively to be released sometime in 2007. Their videotapes are currently distributed by Vtape in Toronto and Video Out in Vancouver.
